Why the concentration exists

Large power transformers now require up to four years to procure, while cables take two to three years. Average lead times for cables and large power transformers have almost doubled since 2021. Power transformer lead times average 128 weeks and generator step-up units average 144 weeks. These extended timelines create bottlenecks for commercial and industrial growth.[8][10]

Substations built during the post-war era were designed to last 30 to 40 years. Some are now providing 50 to 60 years of service. Modern technologies can extend the life of an aging substation by 20 years or more. Substation uprating offers an alternative where increased capacity is required but routine expansion is hindered by lack of land area.[6][18]

Who supplies it

ABB has secured multiple substation upgrade contracts including a $14 million order from Svenska Kraftnät and a $40 million contract from TransnetBW. The company won an order worth around $17 million from SP Energy Networks to upgrade its 275-kV Kilmarnock South substation in Scotland. ABB also secured a four-year frame agreement to supply RTU560 units to a UK distribution network operator. Southern States manufactures critical substation components with over a century of innovation.[11][13][15][16][12][4]

Sunbelt Solomon offers refurbished, rewound, and new substation transformers with industry-leading lead times. Waukesha, headquartered in Wisconsin, built a new substation transformer for Grand Valley Power delivered in March 2025. Hitachi Energy is building a $457 million facility in South Boston, Virginia. Siemens Energy invested $150 million in a Charlotte, North Carolina plant.[5][19][10]

TRC oversees substation rebuilds, expansions, and greenfield projects. EETS engineers designed a 230kV:21kV substation within the fence line of an existing PG&E substation for Johns-Manville. Eaton committed $340 million to a three-phase transformer facility in South Carolina. ABB allocated $110 million to US operations in 2025 to scale manufacturing for rising energy demand.[7][3][10][14]

What it depends on, and what depends on it

Gas-insulated switchgear holds high voltage in prefabricated structures using hexafluoride gas as an insulating medium. ABB is installing the world's first 380kV gas-insulated switchgear using an alternative gas mixture to SF6 in Germany. Power transformers step down transmission voltages to distribution levels for end-user delivery. National Grid is installing a 400/25kV Supergrid transformer at Bramley substation for Network Rail's decarbonization.[9][15][17]

Remote terminal units enable monitoring and control of distribution substations at 132kV, 33kV, and 11kV voltage levels. Relay panels and custom control enclosures provide protection and automation capabilities. Protection equipment safeguards against faults and coordinates outage requirements during upgrades. Control house capacity must be evaluated when planning substation expansions.[12][2][1]

What would break it

Prices for cables have nearly doubled since 2019, and power transformer prices rose around 75%. Unit prices increased 77% for power transformers and 45% for generator step-up units since 2019. Manufacturers have committed nearly $2 billion to new or expanded transformer capacity since 2023. This investment responds to the surge in demand from AI, data centers, and grid expansion.[8][10]

What to watch

ABB allocated $15 million to its Senatobia, Mississippi site for a new production line dedicated to Emax 3 circuit breakers. This production line is slated for launch in 2026. ABB committed $30 million for expansion of its Richmond, Virginia operations, doubling the site's size. The Richmond expansion becomes operational in late 2025.[14]
