Why the concentration exists
Specialty gases used in semiconductor manufacturing carry acute hazards that further constrain supply. Nitrogen trifluoride is the highest-volume etch gas at advanced nodes, and fluorocarbons have a global warming potential of 7,000–23,500. Arsine and phosphine have a threshold limit value of 0.05 ppm and an immediately-dangerous-to-life-or-health concentration of 1 ppm. These toxicity and environmental profiles are why handling, cylinder design, and pressure-relief devices are tightly regulated, and why qualified supply chains are narrow.[15][12][13]
Downstream logistics are governed by a mix of mode economics and safety regulation. Over-the-road trucking accounts for around three-fifths of domestic chemical shipment volume, rail for around one-fifth, and the remaining "other" category is more than three-quarters pipeline transportation of ethylene and oxygen, usually for short distances. Rail is recognized by the U.S. Department of Transportation as the safest method for moving large quantities of chemicals over long distances. Each mode has its own equipment, certification, and routing requirements, which adds to the qualification cost of any new entrant.[19][21]

The industrial-gas majors dominate the supply of bulk and packaged gases and the engineering that ties them into customer sites. Linde delivers packaged gaseous chemicals to customers across 60+ countries, and Linde Engineering reported 2025 sales of approximately $34 billion after completing over 4,000 projects worldwide. Linde Indonesia, a subsidiary of Linde, announced plans to build a $117.33 million air separation plant in Cilegon, Banten, to supply PT Krakatau Steel. Air Liquide, the parent of Airgas, runs a national network of more than 1,400 locations in the United States providing nitrogen pumping services and ammonia delivery programs.[17][18][16][20]
Harris is identified as a specialist in gas and chemical delivery systems with a strong emphasis on safety and reliability, serving healthcare and energy sectors. Praxair, now part of Linde, is described as a leader in industrial gases with extensive infrastructure and a dominant distribution network following its merger with Linde AG. For merchant chemicals, Air Products supplies large and small volumes of nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, and syngas plus gas separation and purification technologies, with 99.99% delivery performance to chemical processing customers.[2][1]
Component and subsystem suppliers support the major gas companies and end users. Entegris, listed on the page as a capturer of distribution and packaging value, sits alongside specialty chemical handlers and fab-side integrators. EMD Group supplies ultrasonic empty sensors and continuous-output liquid refill systems for chemical utilization. HARRIS and the broader specialist fabricator base build custom systems from plastics, stainless steel, Inconel, titanium, and aluminum, offering prototypes and serving OEM, aerospace, agricultural, energy, transportation, medical, and petrochemical customers.[4][3][2]

What it depends on, and what depends on it
Chemical and gas delivery infrastructure sits between upstream chemical and gas production and the point of use at semiconductor fabs, refineries, petrochemical plants, steel mills, and pipelines. It carries the acids, bases, solvents, and specialty gases that enable etching, cleaning, deposition, and other process steps, and it also handles the molecules that oil and gas supply chains produce, process, transport, store, and deliver. Within the natural gas value chain, the U.S. transmission system is the bridge from producing regions to local utility delivery points, and gathering systems feed processing plants that condition gas before it enters long-haul lines.[5][8][22]
The infrastructure is physically made from high-strength steel pipe, alloys, and the valves, compressors, tanks, and coatings attached to it. Standard U.S. natural gas transmission pipe is normally between 30 and 36 inches in diameter. Hydrogen delivery uses pipelines in regions with hundreds of tons per day of demand expected to remain stable for decades, and refueling stations compress hydrogen to 350–700 bar and dispense at up to 10 kg/min. Cylinders and valves are governed by DOT specifications and by CGA V-9 for valves manufactured on or after November 7, 2019.[8][6][13]

Specialty gases and feedstocks for chemical manufacturing are exposed to single-route geographic chokepoints. Asian petrochemical plants rely on the Middle East for 70–80% of their naphtha feedstock, most of which passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Ar-Razi Saudi Methanol, a joint venture of Mitsubishi Gas Chemical with annual capacity exceeding 4 million metric tons, has had its methanol supplies suspended because of the Strait of Hormuz closure. China imports roughly 12 million barrels of crude oil per day, of which about 14% comes from Iran, so prolonged regional conflict could cut off Iranian crude supplies entirely.[14]
What to watch
New U.S. natural gas pipeline capacity is on track for a record year in 2026. Morningstar DBRS estimates roughly 18 Bcf/d of new pipeline capacity is likely to enter service in 2026, and one industry source pegs the total at up to 22 Bcf/d, the highest annual total since 2008, when about 31 Bcf/d was added. Kinder Morgan plans to start a 570 MMcf/d expansion of Gulf Coast Express in mid-2026. FERC's pending major pipeline list as of April 13, 2026 includes the 56-mile Sabine Crossing, the 291-mile Southern System Expansion 4, and the 208-mile Mississippi Crossing.[24][9]
Federal funding is being directed at delivery-system components. The U.S. Department of Energy announced up to $65.5 million in federal funding for cost-shared projects to strengthen domestic oil and natural gas production and improve the efficiency and reliability of critical energy infrastructure, including chemical and gas delivery components such as compressors, valves, piping, storage tanks, coatings, and alloys. The application deadline for the funding opportunity is September 22, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET.[7][10]
Hydrogen and electronics-grade gas capacity is queued for later in the decade. Around 37,000 km of hydrogen pipelines have been announced to 2035, but less than 6% have reached final investment decision, and in Germany work began in 2025 on repurposing a 400 km section of a natural gas pipeline, a world-first project of that scale. Air Liquide has committed over $150 million to an Idaho gas plant to supply ultra-pure nitrogen, oxygen, and argon for rising AI-driven memory-chip production, with operations slated to start in 2028.[11][23]
