Why the concentration exists

AI server OEMs are Original Equipment Manufacturers that package AI accelerators and other components into validated, deployable server systems. These companies integrate GPUs, CPUs, memory, and networking into rack-scale platforms, then sell them with software stacks, warranties, and enterprise support. System integrators and OEMs such as Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Supermicro, and IBM assemble these chips into systems that enterprises can deploy without designing hardware themselves.[7]

Supply concentration stems from close ties between OEMs and leading silicon providers, which ensure access to the latest GPUs and accelerators. Dell maintains relationships with silicon vendors that help keep its servers current with modern compute demands. The company also operates an OEM and Original Design Manufacturer solutions arm alongside an e-procurement platform, giving it structural advantages in fulfilling large orders quickly.[1]

Hyperscalers have locked in multi-year manufacturing capacity with Tier 1 ODMs, consuming an estimated 40 to 60 percent of high-end server production slots in 2024. This concentration of capacity among the largest buyers pushes enterprise customers to the back of queues. Some buyers prioritize access to Nvidia GPUs through their preferred OEM over server brand differentiation, because vendors report massive backlogs and demand outpacing supply.[2][4]

Who supplies it

Taiwanese manufacturers including Foxconn, Wistron, Quanta Computer, Wiwynn, Inventec, and Accton Technology dominate AI server manufacturing. Foxconn operates with a net margin of just 2.3 percent despite surging AI server demand, with inventories up 31 percent year-on-year and total debt rising 34 percent. Wistron recorded revenue growth of more than 108 percent, with approximately 62 percent of its sales generated by data centre products, yet its net margin remains only 1.25 percent.[8]

Celestica is identified as one of the few non-Taiwanese manufacturers outperforming Western competitors in AI server production. Gigabyte leverages decades of motherboard and component expertise to deliver high-performance GPU servers at competitive prices. Its OEM and ODM flexibility makes it suitable for system integrators and organizations building custom AI infrastructure.[8][6]

The top four AI server OEMs are Dell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Lenovo, and Supermicro. North America is home to major OEM giants Dell and HPE, along with specialized integrators known for innovation and high-performance computing solutions. Taiwan is renowned for high-end server components and advanced motherboards that feed into these OEM systems.[16][3]

AMD Helios rack-scale solutions are available from leading OEMs including Bull, HPE, Lenovo, and Supermicro, as well as infrastructure partners Sanmina and Wiwynn. Dell and AMD expanded on-premises AI infrastructure with support for AMD Instinct MI350P PCIe GPUs in Dell PowerEdge servers, including the PowerEdge XE7745 and R7725. The AMD Instinct MI350P PCIe GPU delivers up to 4,600 peak teraflops using MXFP4 precision and includes 144GB of HBM3e memory.[14][15]

What would break it

Amazon with Trainium, Google with TPU, Microsoft with Maia, and Meta with MTIA are all building custom AI silicon in-house. If the world's largest AI compute buyers stop procuring from Dell and HPE in favor of fully internal solutions, the addressable market for OEMs could shrink significantly. These hyperscalers represent the largest customers in the AI infrastructure market.[5]

Nvidia has reportedly booked entire server plant capacity through 2026 to build Blackwell and Rubin AI servers, pushing out other potential customers. This capacity lock-in by a single silicon vendor could constrain OEMs that rely on Nvidia GPUs for their server platforms. Extended lead times for general server components are also affecting the broader market.[9][10]

What to watch

Dell PowerEdge XE9880L and XE9885L servers will be globally available in Q3 2026. HPE announced the HPE Compute XD690 with NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra GPUs, expected to ship in October 2025. The HPE ProLiant DL380a Gen12 supports up to eight RTX PRO 6000 GPUs in a 4U form factor and is scheduled to ship in September 2025.[11][13][12]

AMD's second generation of AI servers, the Helios servers containing the MI455X AI accelerator and new Venice central processor, are in full production and will start shipping at the end of the third quarter of 2026. OpenAI plans to start using Helios racks later in 2026 and deploy them at massive scale starting towards the end of 2026, accelerating throughout 2027. AMD announced a multi-year deal with OpenAI in October 2025 that would bring in tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue.[19][17]

Dell entered FY2027 with a $43 billion AI-server backlog after shipping $25 billion in fiscal 2026. Super Micro guided fiscal 2026 revenue to roughly $39 billion, more than 70 percent of it from GPU and AI platforms, with what it says is the world's largest liquid-cooled rack production line at roughly 5,000 racks per month. HPE's AI infrastructure grew 52 percent year-over-year in fiscal Q2 2026, while Lenovo's Infrastructure Solutions Group hit $19.2 billion with AI revenue up 84 percent year-over-year.[18]
