Why the concentration exists
Ethernet switch ASICs are specialized chips that route packets between ports in data center networks, and their supply concentrates around a few vendors because development costs have risen from hundreds of thousands of dollars in the 1990s to tens of millions by 2009. These chips require advanced manufacturing processes, with Broadcom's Jericho 3 etched in 5-nanometer processes at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. The capital intensity of designing a full custom switch chip pushes most switch vendors toward merchant silicon from a small number of ASIC suppliers rather than developing their own.[6][8]
Modern switch ASICs integrate hundreds of high-speed SerDes transceivers that convert between electrical and optical signals, with Broadcom's Tomahawk 5 packing 512 100G PAM4 SerDes to achieve 51.2 terabits per second of aggregate bandwidth. These chips support configurations such as 64 ports at 800 gigabits per second or 128 ports at 400 gigabits per second. A single Tomahawk 5 can replace 48 of the Tomahawk 1 switches released in 2014, achieving a 95% reduction in power requirements.[4][14]
The ASICs fall into distinct families optimized for different use cases, with Broadcom offering the Strata XGS line for fixed-configuration switches and the Strata DNX line acquired from Dune for modular systems with separate fabric chips. The Jericho family includes deep-buffer capabilities for handling congestion, while the Tomahawk family prioritizes raw throughput. Cisco's Silicon One architecture consolidates routing and switching functions onto a single chip, with the G300 reaching 102.4 terabits per second in a single device.[6][10][12]

These ASICs are assembled into switches by original design manufacturers and sold by vendors including Arista, Cisco, and white-box suppliers, with Arista holding 20.7% share of the data center Ethernet switching market and Cisco accounting for 17.8% according to IDC data. White-box manufacturers maintained a significant presence in the market. Arista reached 10,000 customers and 100 million ports installed globally by 2024, achieving number one market share in data center switching.[1][7]

What would break it
Supply lead times for network chips reached 52 weeks as of July 2022, though Cisco switch lead times returned to the typical 4-12 week range by the end of 2023. Cisco's CEO told investors in August 2023 that excess backlog would work down in the first half of fiscal 2024. The volatility in delivery times reflects the tight supply chain for advanced ASICs manufactured at leading-edge process nodes.[5][16]
Ethernet competes with Nvidia's InfiniBand and NVLink for AI cluster interconnects, and while Ethernet is pervasive and reduces vendor lock-in, it cannot match the performance of Nvidia's proprietary networking products. The UALink Consortium has released specifications for an alternative to Nvidia's NVLink but remains months away from shipping silicon as of early 2025. Nvidia's networking kit does not always interoperate with GPUs from other suppliers, creating pressure for open alternatives.[2]
Programmable switch architectures offer one path to differentiation, with Barefoot Networks' Tofino chips programmable via the P4 language created by a consortium including Microsoft, Google, and Stanford University. Intel acquired Barefoot in 2019, bringing programmable switching capability into its portfolio. Arista's 7170 Series switches based on Barefoot Tofino demonstrated the potential for programmable devices to serve multiple use cases through software reconfiguration.[9][10][11]
What to watch
Nvidia expects Quantum-X InfiniBand switches to be released later in 2025, while Spectrum-X Photonics Ethernet switches will arrive in 2026. The Spectrum-X Photonics platform offers up to 1.6 terabits per second per port and 400 terabits per second aggregate bandwidth, with configurations supporting up to 512 ports at 800 gigabits per second or 2,048 ports at 200 gigabits per second.[3]
The Ultra Ethernet Consortium released Spec 1.0 in June 2025, a 560-page framework covering congestion control, RDMA, and multi-vendor interoperability. Micas Networks announced the industry's first 51.2-terabit Co-Packaged Optics network switch system in volume production as of March 18, 2025, featuring Broadcom's Bailly CPO switch device with a Tomahawk 5 chip coupled to eight silicon photonics chiplets.[14][15]
Datacenter Ethernet switch sales rose 62% year-over-year to $8.73 billion in the third quarter of 2025, accounting for 59.5% of the Ethernet switch market. Sales of switches with 200 gigabit per second, 400 gigabit per second, or 800 gigabit per second speeds comprised $5.43 billion in revenues, representing 37% of the worldwide Ethernet switching market in that quarter.[13]
