Why the concentration exists
Integrated device manufacturers are companies that design and manufacture semiconductors in-house rather than outsourcing fabrication to third-party foundries. This vertical integration distinguishes them from fabless companies, which design chips but contract out production, and from pure-play foundries, which manufacture chips designed by others. Intel is the only major IDM that both designs and manufactures its own advanced chips as a single firm. It is also the only company in the United States that performs both leading-edge design and manufacturing in-house. The model allows for process-design co-optimization, where manufacturing processes can be tailored to specific product requirements.[5][6][8][16]
The IDM model requires enormous capital investment, with companies spending $20 to 40 billion annually on fabrication plants. Gross margins typically range from 50 to 60 percent. A large fabrication plant requires thousands of workers and ongoing infrastructure costs, whereas a comparable fabless firm may employ only around 100 specialized designers. This capital intensity creates high barriers to entry and favors companies with deep financial resources. The need to continuously invest in new process nodes and manufacturing equipment further concentrates the industry.[1][4]

Samsung Electronics has a projected 2026 semiconductor division revenue exceeding $70 billion. Intel Corporation has a projected 2026 revenue exceeding $63 billion. These three firms dominate the IDM landscape by revenue.[2][20][19]
Intel supplies computer processors to more than 80 percent of PCs worldwide. The company also supplies nearly 100 percent of data center processors globally. Sixty percent of Intel's revenues come from PCs and laptops. Server farms provide about 33 percent of revenues and more than 50 percent of operating profits. Intel invests $10 billion annually in its factories.[15]

What it depends on, and what depends on it
Intel manufactures chips primarily in the United States, Ireland, and Israel. The company has additional manufacturing facilities and assembly or test sites in China, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Despite its internal manufacturing capabilities, Intel outsources some chip production to foundries like TSMC. This outsourcing particularly applies to designs requiring leading-edge process nodes. The blend of internal and external manufacturing reflects Intel's IDM 2.0 strategy.[14]
IDMs and foundries with internal packaging operations may also outsource a percentage of their packaging production to OSATs. The SEMI and TechSearch International database tracks over 50 IDM assembly and test facilities in Southeast Asia. There are around 25 such facilities in China and around 20 in the Americas. The broader database includes more than 475 total back-end facilities encompassing both IDMs and OSATs. This geographic distribution reflects decades of investment in assembly and test capacity.[3][17][18]

What would break it
Intel responded to its manufacturing challenges by launching IDM 2.0 in March 2021. The strategy involves internal manufacturing, external foundry engagement, and the establishment of Intel Foundry Services. Intel Foundry Services was created as a standalone business unit to serve third-party customers. The company is targeting early 2025 for its Intel 18A node readiness. Intel remains on track to deliver five process nodes in four years as part of this strategy.[11][13][12]
What to watch
SK Hynix is building a DRAM and HBM fabrication facility in Cheongju, South Korea. The planned completion date is November 2025 for early mass production. The project is part of a total investment of KRW 20 trillion. This facility will expand the company's capacity for high-bandwidth memory used in AI applications. The timeline positions SK Hynix to capture growing AI semiconductor demand.[7]
Samsung received $4.745 billion in finalized CHIPS Act funding for logic and advanced packaging fabs in Austin and Taylor, Texas. The expected total investment is $40 billion. Texas Instruments received $1.61 billion in finalized CHIPS Act funding for three new 300mm wafer fabs. These facilities will produce analog and embedded processing semiconductors. TI's investment extends through 2030.[7]
Intel expects to invest more than $100 billion to expand manufacturing capacity in Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, and Ohio. This investment is supported by CHIPS Act funding of up to $7.86 billion. Intel foundry forecasts $15 billion in external revenue by 2030 from advanced packaging, advanced EUV, and older process nodes. SiCSem Pvt. Ltd. broke ground on India's first IDM facility in Bhubaneswar, Odisha on November 1, 2025. The estimated investment is ₹2,067 crore for end-to-end silicon carbide semiconductor production.[9][10][21]
